Rio Norte Jr. High Music Department

MARCH 12, 2020

An Important Update from Mr. G

Good evening my music family. It is with a sad and heavy heart that I have to announce the cancelation of all festivals.

This includes:

- SCVA Vocal Jazz Festival on March 13th
- SCVA Choral Festival on March 20th
- Music in the Parks and Disneyland trip on March 27th-28th
- SCSBOA on April 1st
- Fullerton Vocal Jazz Festival on April 17th

We will receive a refund for all festivals and as soon as I have those refunds, I will be able to direct the district office to send out refund payments.

My apologies for this as I know the festival season is a highlight of all that we do as a music department.

I will keep you updated with any new developments as they arise.

Jeff Gilbert

Important Dates and Details for Choir

The rest of the year is a busy one for the choirs. It seems every Friday we have a festival between choral and instrumental ensembles. It is very important that we all stay healthy the rest of the year as colds and flu season is upon us. Here is the breakdown for the month.

March 13th (Friday) (JazzHawks only)
Southern California Vocal Association, Vocal Jazz Festival
Valencia High School

Students will need to arrive at Valencia, dressed, and ready to perform by 3:00pm. As they feature mostly high schools, Rio Norte is in a unique position as we are one of the few junior high schools to participate in vocal jazz festivals.

UPDATE:
No festival. We will perform and get a clinic from one of the judges at Rio tomorrow. Plan on staying till 3pm instead. No black needed.

March 20th (Friday, 1:00 – 3:30)
Southern California Vocal Association Choral Festival
West Ranch High School
Rio is hosting this festival at the Ranch for junior high and middle school students. Choir will need to bring their formals to change into at Rio Norte. We will take a bus leaving Rio Norte to take us to West Ranch in time for warm up and get our bearings. Students will be ready for pick up at 3:30 at West Ranch High School.

March 27th & 28th (Friday-Saturday)
Annual Music in the Parks and Disney Festival Trip
We leave on Friday at noon and will return Saturday night around midnight. An itinerary will be sent in email. All payments should be in by Friday March 6
th as we have to pay out to the vendors for the trip.

April 17th (Friday)  (JazzHawks only)
Fullerton College Vocal Jazz Festival
We will travel once again to Fullerton College to participate in our second festival. This is a high school jazz festival which Rio Norte attended and placed third out of seven, competing against six high schools in our division. We are relying on drivers for this event as the cost for a bus is out of our budget. Mr. G is a district approved driver and can drive 6 students in the van. If you are a district approved driver and wish to join us, we could use your help to drive students. Parents can drive their own child if you wish to join us, but unless you are an approved driver for the district, no other child can be in the vehicle. Please let Mr. Gilbert know if you can join us and can drive student(s).

May 19th (Tuesday)
Choral Tech Rehearsal
All choirs will be in attendance as we work with the combo, sound and lighting for our performance on May 21st. Tech rehearsal will run from 2:15 – 6:00. As always if we can get through as needed, we will be out earlier.

May 21st (Thursday)
Choral Spring Concert
This is a big event for Rio Norte Music as we bring all choirs together for what is always a fantastic event. Tickets for this event are $10 and will go on prior to performance.

We will also be hosting the Music in the Parks Festival in April and May.  We will need student and parent volunteers for this event.  See the Music in the Parks page for more details.

Volunteers Needed!

We need your help! Every year, all instrumental students across the district audition for a spot in the District Honor Band. This year, Rio Norte has been chosen for the hosting of this event. To make this run as smoothly as possible for all our students, we need a lot of help.

Please go to the Sign Up Genius link below and find way you can help out. All band and choir students are requested to help out with a shift on either Friday or Saturday.

Thank you, families, for helping our Music Department!
